Urban Traffic Control & Remote Monitoring System
The challenge
National Highways is responsible for several hundred traffic signal sites across the South East of England. Operation and maintenance of these assets was problematic because there was no means of remotely monitoring them and some were connected to a legacy Urban Traffic Control (UTC) system. As a result, the sites were underperforming, leading to road user delays and negative customer feedback.
What we did
4way worked closely with Costain, providing technical leadership and project management services in order to implement a new UTC system and connect all sites through a Remote Monitoring System (RMS). We undertook connectivity surveys and made recommendations for suitable communications services (e.g. ADSL, NRTS or cellular), witnessed the installation and testing of the new UTC system, supervised MOVA installations / upgrades and supported the installation of G-NAT cellular connectivity.
Throughout the task we acted as the clients representative, witnessing testing and commissioning activities to ensure compliance with cyber security requirements and a smooth transition to operations.
Our results
The new UTC and RMS provided National Highways with real time asset performance and fault data at traffic signal sites across the South East. This provided a better understanding of regional assets and facilitated improvements to planned and reactive maintenance decision making. Control room operators benefitted from enhanced traffic condition data, enabling them to make better informed interventions at the right times to improve traffic flows.
