Switch Island Intelligent Road Studs
The challenge
Switch Island is a major signalised gyratory in Liverpool where the M57, M58 and three major A roads meet. This complex junction suffered from a higher than average accident rate with regular “side swipe” collisions caused by poor lane discipline.
What we did
This was the first motorway junction site in England where intelligent road studs were deployed. The studs operate collaboratively with the traffic signal controller, illuminating safe routes through the junction for traffic proceeding through green lights. More than 170 studs were installed along with elevated traffic signal heads which can be seen more easily by approaching road users. 4way undertook the detailed design and led the testing of traffic signals, controller configurations and their interface to the intelligent road stud controller. We led stakeholder liaison with Clearview (intelligent road stud suppliers), National Highways and Sefton Council whilst also supporting the Contractor by dealing with technical queries from site.
Our results
The scheme received national media attention and was widely praised by key stakeholders including Sefton Borough Council. The scheme has delivered positive outcomes at a location previously considered to be an accident black spot.
