Gallows Corner Flyover Refurbishment: Enhancing Safety and Efficiency
The challenge
Supporting Costain and Pell Frischmann, 4way was commissioned to manage street lighting changes as part of complex structural refurbishments on Gallows Corner Flyover for Transport for London (TfL). This challenging project required meticulous planning to remove and reposition lighting assets, ensuring clear access for essential upgrades that will extend the flyover’s lifespan and improve safety for all road users.

What we did
Our team worked to design a street lighting solution that met highway standards and construction timelines. A thorough review of current lighting levels was undertaken to baseline visibility and safety to enable design improvements suitable for high-traffic areas in line with BS 5489-1:2020. We designed lighting for three new signal-controlled pedestrian crossings, enhancing safety and ensuring an even lighting distribution across these critical areas. Where feasible, lighting columns were connected to the DNO’s low-voltage main, while isolated areas required coordination with private supply points that integrated new cabling and chambers to establish a cohesive, reliable lighting infrastructure solution.

Our results
Our team successfully delivered a lighting solution that met TfL and local authority standards, ensuring compliance with long-term maintenance and operational requirements. By identifying the need for additional lighting at pedestrian crossings to enhance night-time safety, we achieved improvements that were approved in collaborative workshops with TfL, highlighting our commitment to proactive, safety-focused design.
